TEACHING STAFF SELECTION
The School of Law adopts and follows clear, transparent and merit-based procedures for the selection of staff possessing the appropriate qualifications and provides employment conditions that respect the importance of teaching and research, as prescribed by the relevant legislation. The procedure for the appointment or promotion of staff has as its exclusive objectives
- The safeguarding of the prestige of the School
- The continuous improvement of the School’s educational and research work
- The continuous enhancement of the School’s position at both national and international level.
In the selection and promotion of staff, the applicable legislation and the relevant regulatory decisions of the Senate are observed. All members of teaching staff possess, at minimum, the necessary teaching competences. Fulfilment of this requirement is ensured through the procedures provided by law for the announcement of posts and their recruitment or appointment under Law 4957/2022 (Government Gazette A΄ 141), which establishes the procedures and conditions for election to a new vacant faculty position. New positions are announced in accordance with Articles 138, 139 and 141 of Law 4957/2022, and candidates for a position of Teaching and Research Staff at any rank must meet specific criteria, including teaching, as set out in Article 143 of Law 4957/2022.
In addition, paragraph 3 of the relevant article provides that the assessment for the election of a new faculty member is based on the candidate’s overall teaching and research work and includes, among other factors, the evaluation of his or her teaching competence. Candidates who “meet the qualifications required by law for election to a faculty position, in accordance with Article 143, are invited by the Head of the School to deliver a scientific lecture on one (1) topic related to the academic subject of the advertised position before the members of the Electoral Body and the academic community, including interested students” (Article 147(7)).
The School of Law has established the Register of Members, as provided by Law 4957/2022, which has been posted on the APELLA website. The Register of Members is regularly updated.
The teaching work of the Master’s Programmes is assigned by decision of the competent body of the relevant Programme. The assignment of teaching duties within a Master’s Programme is made by decision of the competent body, namely the School Assembly or the Programme Committee in the case of an interdepartmental or inter-institutional study programme, following a recommendation by the Coordinating Committee of the Master’s Programme, where such a committee exists, or otherwise by the Director of the Master’s Programme.
More specific terms and conditions concerning the assignment of teaching work may be laid down in the founding decision of each Master’s Programme. Teaching work includes:
- independent teaching of compulsory and elective courses,
- the conduct of laboratories and laboratory exercises,
- clinical work for the teaching of students and the conduct of clinical exercises,
- supervision and coordination of students during internships,
- supervision of papers or theses and
- the organisation and conduct of seminars and conferences or the organisation and coordination of other educational activities aimed at deepening and consolidating, at a high level, students’ knowledge in scientific areas falling within the academic subject of the study programme.
The teaching staff of a Master’s Programme may consist of:
- members of the Teaching and Research Staff, Special Educational Staff, Laboratory Teaching Staff and Special Technical Laboratory Staff of the School or of other Schools of the same or another Higher Education Institution or Higher Military Education Institution, with additional employment beyond their statutory duties where the Master’s Programme charges tuition fees;
- emeritus Professors or retired faculty members of the School or of other Schools of the same or another Higher Education Institution;
- affiliated professors;
- appointed instructors;
- visiting professors or visiting researchers;
- researchers and special research scientists of research and technological bodies under Article 13A of Law 4310/2014 (Government Gazette A΄ 258) or of other research centres and institutes in Greece or abroad;
- scholars of recognised standing who possess specialised knowledge and relevant experience in the academic subject of the Master’s Programme.
In every case, the basic prerequisite for the submission and evaluation of a candidacy continues to be the fulfilment of the criteria provided by the applicable legislation, under which the candidate’s overall scientific work is assessed, namely teaching, research, clinical or laboratory work, as well as academic integrity.
The following table sets out categories of criteria that are positively taken into account by the members of the Electoral Body and considered together with the candidate’s overall curriculum vitae, always on the condition that the formal requirements of the applicable legislation are satisfied.
